Nick Woodcock is a contemporary artist working in oils and acrylic, primarily on wood panel and canvas, Nick's distinctive style is characterized by its realistic depictions of birds, animals, fish and people posed against bright, strong, colorful and textured backgrounds, often referring back to abstract modernists and the masters of color, Rothko and Albers.

Born in Cornwall, England, Nick grew up surrounded by art and artists in his family. His father focused on printmaking, drawing, and lettering, and his grandfather was a noted watercolorist. As a child, every holiday included time with the painters and art galleries of St.Ives and Newlyn which created a familiarity and connection to contemporary artists and particularly the coast and landscapes of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.

After a significant career in corporate America, Nick has now embarked on a dedicated artistic journey, with a hope to continue to explore and hone his approach to image-making and the exploration of color and form.

“My art is balanced between realism and abstraction, allowing for both a recognizable connection to things in the world and more abstract representation. The focus is on the exploration of image and color. Influenced by the color fields of Mark Rothko and the rigorous color theory of Josef Albers, my practice delves into the opportunities presented with color and form. I get inspiration from the natural world, including striking tropical birds, beautiful flowers, and brightly colored bugs and beetles, alongside the rich landscapes and maritime heritage of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, drawing inspiration from their unique light, rugged beauty, and deep-rooted stories.”

Nick is now based in Atlantic Beach, Florida, a coastal community in Northeast Florida, where the ocean and beach life provide new sources of inspiration, and provides a prompt to continue to explore and experiment with art, color and image-making.
